Meet the Maker

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I am the creator behind Knitting En Route. I am a polymer clay artist, knitter, professional theatre performer, and avid traveler in both the real world and written ones.

As a child I was gifted a book on how to make magical clay creatures – fairies, dragons, elves. I would spend hours following the pictured instructions to bring these tiny beings to life. A fairy still inhabits my mother’s dresser amusingly unbaked as I was afraid baking would ruin my childhood masterpiece.

Moving forward, I discovered the fiber community in full in summer 2020 while living and traveling out of my partner and I’s van, Estelle. To give myself a creative outlet when the theatre industry shut down and the woods became our home, I picked up knitting again in earnest after learning the basics from my grandmother as a wee one. Suddenly a new world opened to me filled with makers, artists, beautiful craftsmanship, kindness, color, and the pleasure of responding, “Thanks! I made it!” I found out what stitch markers were, their usefulness, and their sheer artistic potential as tiny works of art. My imagination was on fire and Knitting En Route was born.

I aim to create little masterpieces once again – baked this time – to adorn the special work of others inspired by “the magic of exploration.” For me, inspiration comes in all forms whether it be climbing a mountain, traveling the world, or traversing through the pages of a book. And the things truly worth having connect in both head and heart.

In this space I wish you connection, adventure, and beauty in life and all your making journeys! Let us explore and make some magic together!
